American Red Cross names Disaster
Staging Area after Katherine Harper
Charlotte, N.C., October 11, 2006 - The Greater
Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross has chosen to honor long time
substantial donor Katherine Harper with the naming of the on-site disaster
staging area located on Park Road. According to Red Cross Chief Executive
Officer Pamela Daigle, the staging area will be named The Katherine Harper
Disaster Staging Area.
Every other day, the Greater Carolinas Chapter responds to a disaster - and a
neighbor in need - in Mecklenburg and Iredell counties. In less than two hours
of notification from emergency management personnel, Red Cross volunteers are
on site to provide food, clothing, a safe place to sleep and other vital
necessities.
The Katherine Harper Disaster Staging Area is a multi-use workspace for storing,
loading and deploying the equipment and supplies needed to help our community.
The staging area houses food, blankets and cots, comfort kits, cleaning
supplies, and other essentials for families who have survived disasters such as
house fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, etc. From this single location the
Red Cross is prepared to immediately respond to disasters of any size, through
on-site supplies and coordination of other local resources.
"In addition to supporting Hurricane Katrina victims in 2005, this year has been
unprecedented for local disasters," said Daigle. "Our local Chapter has
provided assistance to over 2,000 survivors of disaster - twice as many
individuals as last year. The generous support of Katherine and Ron Harper is a
significant acknowledgment of our successful track record of providing
immediate disaster relief to the residents of Mecklenburg and Iredell
counties."
